About Latvia

Latvia is one of three Baltic countries located in Northern Europe. Bordered by Belarus, Estonia, Russia and Lithuania, Latvia operates under a democratic parliamentary system of government that was established in 1918. The Lithuanian and Latvian language are the only surviving Baltic languages, with over two million people living in and around Latvia speaking this unique language.

A member of the EU, NATO, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations, Latvia is a high income country and places in the top 50 on the Human Development Index. In 2014, the Latvian lats was replaced by the euro as its standard currency.

Universities and other higher education institutions offer academic, professional and applied professional programs that lead to undergraduate and graduate business degrees. UNESCO reported that in 2010, nearly 1800 international students were attending universities in Latvia, with most of these students coming from Lithuania, Ukraine and Russia.

How Long Does It Take to Earn a Business Degree in Latvia?

Bachelor degree programs encompassing the business, commerce and finance industries take three to four years to complete. Master's degrees require an additional five years of study while earning a doctoral degree may take a student another three years of study, along with the acceptance of a thesis by university administrators.

How Long is the Academic Year in Latvia?

Most Latvian universities begin their academic year during the first week of September and end some time in June. Students receive time off during the year for public holidays that include Christmas, Easter, the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia (November 18) and the Restoration of the Independence of the Republic of Latvia (May 4).

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fee amounts vary among universities and can range from 2000 EUR ($2200 USD) to as high as 20,000 EUR ($22,000), depending on program's specialty and whether it is an undergraduate or graduate program. Full-time students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week to help pay for their living expenses.
